Dive Stewart Island & Fiordland

Stewart Island and Fiordland waters offer unsurpassed opportunities for the diver. The seas around Stewart Island or the black coral and delicate marine life of the Fiord walls will make your dive holiday aboard "Talisker" an experience to remember. Aboard "Talisker" we can take you into the most remote of our waters in comfort and style. You will dive kelp forests with Divers Suited Upschools of trumpeter and giant moki or perhaps visit the old "Waikare" at Stop Island or even dive our newest wrecks the "Marine Maid" or "Dong Won". Play with blue cod and terakihi and catch (depending on season) crays, scallops or oysters for the table.

Talisker is equipped with compressor and carries two zodiacs and outboard motors to support the diver. Oxygen is carried for safety. A large dive platform makes diving a splash. As divers ourselves we know how to help you get the best out of your dive. We understand the tides, how to work them and know really great sites. Dong Won Propeller

If wreck diving is your thing we can organise a variety of excellent dives. From the Endeavour in Dusky Sound, the oldest European Wreck in New Zealand, to the Waikare, a 100 metre cruise ship off Stop Island or the "Dong Won", which sunk amid much publicity on October 6 1998 off Breaksea Islands, Stewart Island. We have dived them all and can help you plan your diving.

The Dong Won lies off a very exposed point, and is subject to tidal flows of up to 2 to 3 knots. The bow is lying in about 10 Dong Won Wreckmetres of water, the stern in almost 50 metres. She is lying on her starboard side. The rigging and superstructure is festooned with tags of netting torn off as the trawl nets were removed. Like all trawlers there are a fair amount of warps, wires and chains still in place. The wheelhouse is open and very light, with easy access. Internally however the wreck is absolutely black and totally confusing, being like all Asian vessels, very cramped and a real rabbit warren. However in general the wreck appears almost in "sail away" condition. In view of the difficult and exposed situation of the wreck it may not always be possible to dive. We suggest incorporating a visit to the Dong Won in a general dive trip to Stewart Island. If conditions are unsuitable we have some other great dives for you.

*** Please note that in the case of the Dong Won special conditions may apply due to the exposed situation of the wreck ***

Between dives we can take you to points of historic and natural history interest. Whether you want to visit "Captain Cooks Stumps" at Astronomers Point in Dusky Sound, visit Herrick Creek "Moose Country" in Wet Jacket Arm or climb Gog & Magog at Port Pegasus, Stewart Island, we are happy to take you there and share with you all we know about it. Whether your interest is observation and exploring, photography or even a little something for the table, aboard Talisker we know where to go.Zodiac

All the crew are PADI qualified either Open Water, Advanced or Instructor and Iris is a registered nurse. As divers we understand the problems that tide and surface conditions can present. We can help you plan your diving so that each dive you make is interesting and memorable and to make the dive easier we have two zodiacs and outboards as support craft. While comfortably set up for 6 divers on twin share "Talisker" can sleep up to 10 guests on a multiple berth cabin basis. However for safety we limit our parties to 8 active divers.

Never dived before?

We have qualified PADI* instructors who will help you to "PADI* Open Water" certification. You will train in calm and sheltered waters amid beautiful scenery both below and above water. Experience the magic of diving southern waters from aboard a comfortable motor ketch with hot fresh water showers. You will eat local seafood delicacies and if you wish, try your hand at sailing a modern well-equipped ketch.

We can supply a PADI* and OSH** certified dive guide and an experienced support crew. Talisker is centrally heated and we will give you a dive holiday to remember. We have a compressor aboard and weight belts to save your excess baggage bill. If required we can arrange full gear.
